Midwest Biplane Fly In?

EAA 1364 Chapter Meeting, January 28, 2010
President Marvin called the meeting to order and thanked the hearty crowd of 13 members and 1 guest that braved the cold weather to attend. Marvin introduced Steve Hudson, a local aircraft owner, pilot in training and owner of Security Solutions here in Junction City and Manhattan. Steve flies a Cessna 150 and will be working hard with Sam Finan to finish up his ticket this summer.
Jim Clark reported on the opportunity available with the Grand Finale of the National Biplane Association Biplane Expo that took place on the first weekend of June in Bartlesville, OK for the last 23 years. The key question is; could a Midwest aviation organization capitalize on the good will and desire for biplane enthusiasts to gather created by this annual event? It was agreed that the only way to find out is to have a fly in modeled around this great Biplane Expo event and see if it works.
For this to event to even be considered, and before any further planning could take place, we would need to determine if some of the area now farmed could be taken to grass to facilitate aircraft parking. I have marked the below photo, photo courtesy Lewis Thomas, with a RED square marking the crop area needed to be planted in grass to even consider pulling this off. The area marked with the YELLOW square would be needed in grass if the turnout is good and the PINK square would be for future expansion of the event.

Marvin and Jim will be communicating with city officials regarding the need for this additional grass space. We will report on this as soon as we have information. If we receive positive response and commitment on this we will take the event planning into high gear. EAA 1364 would be the lead organization in this event and would take responsibility for insurance coverage through the National EAA. However, if this event is embraced by the biplane and general aviation community it would quickly outgrow the capabilities of our local chapter so we want to involve aviation groups from our area immediately. Participation and involvement with the Flint Hills Flyers and the Abilene Aviation Association would be very important.
The very tentative general plan for the event would be as follows:
Midwest Biplane Fly In
Friday, June 5th early arrivals and casual hamburger feed on the field for pilots and passengers.
Saturday June 6th major fly in events, plane rides, static displays, aircraft judging, vendors, public encouraged to attend. Saturday night catered banquet on the field, guest speaker and awards.
Sunday June7th aircraft departures.
I would encourage you to click here to go to Biplane Expo website.
There will be more information to come so stay tuned and get ready for a great season.

L-1011 Arrival Set for Saturday

From the AHM Hangar:

"Well folks, guess what?

The day has finally come that we can say with 99% surety, our Lockheed L-1011, (I call her Elle) will fly in to her new home here at the AHM, this coming Saturday, January 30th!

Projected arrival time is 1:30 p.m. At this point, the only thing(s) that could change this would be 1. bad weather 2. or the sometimes unforeseens with aircraft. We have a very small staff, so please do not call the museum for updates, THEY WILL BE POSTED HERE. This will include posting her notice of her departure from Roswell and any progress reports we get as she makes her way here.

On your mark.... L-1011 watchers and fans!"

L-1011 Arriving at KMKC

It has come to my attention by word of mouth that a former TWA Lockheed L-1011 TriStar is coming to Wheeler Downtown Airport possibly next week. The story has been going on for some time now on the Airline History Museums website. The officials for the AHM have been trying to obtain a ferry permit which is underway. It is said to possibly be arriving at KMKC next week, Saturday the 30th. A video may be seen on their webstie of the engine runup and taxi that happened a couple days ago which can be seen Here . In addition the the L-1011, AHM's current fleet are a Martin 404, Dougla DC-3 and a Lockheed L-1049 Super G all in TWA's vintage livery. Oh, by the way, the Connie is airworthy and undergoing an overhaul. IT WILL FLY!!!

'Miracle' A320 Wreckage To Be Auctioned Off

The wreck has been stripped of its engines, and it's a bit the worse for wear, with extensive water damage and impact damage to the underside, but the remains of the Airbus A320 that was made famous in last year's Hudson ditching are about to go on the auction block. Interested parties can contact Chartis Aerospace Insurance Services to get a look at the airframe, or click through to visit the Web site's set of 20 detailed photos. An inspection will be scheduled probably within the next 45 days. The aircraft is for sale "as is," and the buyer must move it from its storage site in Kearny, N.J., by April 10 or take over the storage payments. The wreckage was treated with a corrosion inhibitor last summer, but otherwise has not been repaired. The auction closes March 27.

Click here for pictures and to sign up for the auction.

The auction is open to the general public, according to the Web site, and bids can be submitted online. The Airbus A320, famously piloted by Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeff Skiles, ditched in the Hudson after both engines failed following a bird strike shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York, and all on board survived.

Got Unicom?

It is official! I just received the official FCC Radio Station Authorization issuing a Unicom frequency to 8KS8, Prairie Cottage Airport. Surprise, surprise Prairie Cottage was issued a unicom frequency of 122.8 MHz.
I had to get a license because 4 months ago I bid on and bought an old FAA transciever from a closed station. Gotta love ebay.
